Oh that Grandmother! I tell ya, she had a very amusing sense of humor.
Now you must understand that my family is completely related to vultures - they never met a dead carcass they did not want to fight over. Grandmother and I were very much of another ilk however. So, I knew when grandmother was to die - there would be blood letting in the streets and copper wire would be reinvented as they fought over the pennies.
But, I never thought Grandmother was worried about that, much less had a plan!
So, I get this call: "Kris, this is your mother!" Apply a very angry inflection to the tone of this statement with the emphasis upon the word 'mother'. She is always angry with me so I am used to it - just stressful.
"Yeah, what's up?"
"Well, your Grandmother decided in her will that you were to be paid back for having supported her for all of those years."
"Surprising - but I have no idea what the amount might look like...."
"Well! I know because she kept a ledger. So, when her money is available I will have to send you a check for (an awfully large amount!)."
"Hummmmm, I would not have thought it so much..."
Slamming sound on my phone. Yeah she is a little angry.
Gaelic Girl and Dutchman had a huge laugh over this one because the entire family had turned their backs on her while she was alive and inconvenient. I and my uncle were the only ones to actually try and help her! But his efforts were a little side tracked as materialism overcame his wallet about 20 years ago. What a family, toys before people!
But, she exacted her revenge upon them, hitting them exactly where it hurt the most. Per the will, I guess each member of the blood line, plus my children, will receive $10.00. The remainder of the estate will go to bills, of which she listed me as the largest creditor!
I never cared for my Grandmother because I wanted something from her, I loved her. It was with no thought of repayment I bought her a home or paid her taxes or even would landscape her yard. She was my family..... She gave me far more than I could have ever repaid her for - including my belly button! (Yeah, she was a nurse during the war and learn how to tie the darn things the correct way. If it had come untied, my butt might have fallen off at some point!)
So, Grandmother, I know you are watching this and just tickled pink. I am sure you and your sister are just yukking it up.
As for the money, well I can use it to enjoy the trip to Mexico in November with Dutchman's family (and now GG!). Pay some bills and pay to have that tooth fixed next month. I will also work on preserving her paintings better as well (better frames and glass on the watercolors).
Isn't life surprising!
